چکیده

Knowledge generation is key to economic growth, and scientific prizes are designed to encourage it. But how does winning a prestigious prize affect future output? We compare the productivity of Fields medalists (winners of the top mathematics prize) to that of similarly brilliant contenders. The two groups have similar publication rates until the award year, after which the winners’ productivity declines. The medalists begin to “play the field,” studying unfamiliar topics at the expense of writing papers. It appears that tournaments can have large post-prize effects on the effort allocation of knowledge producers. George J. Nber Working Paper Series Industrial Productivity in a Hotter World: the Aggregate Implications of Heterogeneous Firm Investment in Air Conditioning

How will a nation’s aggregate urban productivity be affected by climate change? The joint distribution of climate conditions and economic activity across a nation’s cities will together determine industrial average exposure to climate risk. Air conditioning (AC) can greatly reduce this heat exposure. We develop a simple model of air conditioning adoption by heterogeneous firms within an industr...

Prizes, Publicity and Patents: Non-monetary Awards as a Mechanism to Encourage Innovation*

This paper exploits the selection of prize-winning technologies among exhibitors at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851 to examine whether—and how—ex post prizes that are awarded to high-quality innovations may encourage future innovation. U.S. patent data indicate a 40 per cent increase after 1851 in patenting for prize-winners compared with other exhibits. Results are robust to controlling ...

Is There a Curse of the Fields Medal?

H ow worried should you be that getting a Fields medal might destroy your research career? The question seems preposterous, but a recent paper [BD14] by two economists, George Borjas and Kirk Doran, suggests that this is a question that we, the mathematical and scientific community, should consider. Happily, readers over the age of forty do not need to worry, but perhaps young researchers shoul...

Nber Working Paper Series the Effect of Pollution on Worker Productivity: Evidence from Call-center Workers in China

We investigate the effect of pollution on worker productivity in the service sector by focusing on two call centers in China. Using precise measures of each worker’s daily output linked to daily measures of pollution and meteorology, we find that higher levels of air pollution decrease worker productivity by reducing the number of calls that workers complete each day. These results manifest the...
